Southern Revere Cellars
Can you provide a brief overview of the history and founding of your winery?
In the fall of 2018, our family found the perfect home to make our dream of providing a unique farm-to-glass craft beverage experience for the central Virginia community a reality. That following Spring, we held our first planting party with family and friends from across the Eastern United States. Together, we planted 1080 vines on just over one acre of the farm in a single weekend. This site is now the home of Southern Revere Cellars (opening our doors in December 2021), a place where all are welcome to gather and experience the beautiful natural surroundings of the farm while enjoying our land-made products. From long weekends spent restoring historical pieces for our Tasting Barn to late evenings perfecting our recipes, we have made every effort to ensure your visit is a memorable one.
Are there any unique stories or anecdotes associated with the founding of your winery?
Southern Revere is named after local Virginia folk hero, Jack Jouett, who during the Revolutionary War, made a daring 40-mile dash on horseback to Monticello, the home of Virginia Governor, Thomas Jefferson, to sound the alarm that British forces were on their way to capture the Founding Father. We have it on good authority that Jack Jouett, later dubbed the Paul Revere of the South, used to frequent his father’s Louisa tavern. So, in homage to local history and Jack’s proclivity for superior libations, Southern Revere celebrates our road’s namesake by being Rooted in Tradition and crafted with Ambition.
Are there specific grape varieties that thrive in your vineyards, and why were they chosen?
At Southern Revere Cellars, we've chosen to grow Chambourcin and Chardonell grapes, specifically because they thrive in our unique vineyard conditions. Chambourcin is a resilient, versatile grape variety that produces richly flavored wines, while Chardonell, a hybrid of Chardonnay, is well-suited to our climate and terroir, resulting in expressive and distinctive white wines. Both varieties were selected for their ability to not only adapt to our environment but also for the exceptional quality of wines they produce.
