Black Heath Meadery VWDC Spotlight

Can you provide a brief overview of the history and founding of your winery?

Black Heath Meadery was started to share the beauty of honey wine with the Commonwealth. Focusing on Virginia Wildflower honey and Virginia sourced fruit, our goal was to craft world class meads for the Commonwealth.

What inspired the establishment of your winery, and how has it evolved over the years?

As the world's oldest fermented beverage, we believe Mead needs a place at the table. Little understood, our goal was to elevate mead to a place with the finest wines. To inspire, to surprise, to awaken.

Can you highlight a few of your flagship or signature wines and what makes them stand out?

Blue Angel is a multi-gold Governor's Cup winner. Produced with Virginia's finest apples and honey, this Cyser is 100% Virginia. It's big apple flavors and honey sweetness have long been a favorite.

Describe the atmosphere and experience visitors can expect at your tasting room.

Our tasting room has been described as "the most intimate tasting room in Scott's Addition." Warm and inviting with a funky vibe perfect for a quiet date night or a gathering of friends.

Do you have any specific recommendations for food pairings with your wines?

Traditional mead is great with anything off the grill, especially food with chilis. Smoked or grilled fish, pork or chicken. Try the cyser with Thanksgiving turkey, Berry Goode blueberry mead with pork loin.

Are there sustainability initiatives or practices your winery is involved in?

As beekeepers, we are actively pursuing ways to protect and support the natural habitat where bees live. We utilize the Dominion Green Power program.
